Stephen J. Halkovich

Stephen J. Halkovich, 98, of Edison, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012 at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Menlo Park. Mr. Halkovich was born in Keasbey and has resided in Edison for the last sixty-three years. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII, serving as a third class gunners mate aboard the USS Dakota in the Philippine Liberation Campaign and the Asiatic- Pacific Theatre. He was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation ribbon with one bronze star and also of the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with two bronze stars. Mr. Halkovich was a member of the Hopelawn VFW Memorial Post 1352, the Catholic War Veterans Post 1613 and the Edison American Legion Post 0324. He was employed by Ashland Chemical Corp. (formerly Catalin Corp) in Fords, as a chemical operator for forty-two years before retiring in 1979. Stephen was a communicant of the Our Lady of Peace RC Church in Fords. He was a life member and Third Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council 9199 in Fords, and also had been a member of the Edison Senior Citizens.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Catherine (Koch) Halkovich in 2005. Surviving are his daughter, Donna M. and husband Wayne Merritt of Woodbridge; his grandson, Christopher and wife Gloria Swallick; his granddaughter, Jennifer and husband John Gaster; three great grandchildren,, Zachary and Austin Swallick and Ava Gaster and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 9 AM at the Mitruska Funeral Home, Inc., 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sayreville. Visitation hours will be held Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Memorial donations may be made either to the JFK Haven Hospice or the NJ Veterans Memorial Home in Menlo Park.
