Warren Griffith Nevins, January 5, 1930 - May 18, 2013. Born in Dodge City, Kansas, Warren spent his early years working on his father's ranch and farm implement business. After attending Kansas University and graduating from Baker University, Warren served in the US Army Artillery from 1953 - 1955. He began his career in 1955 with Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Company in Houston as Ad Valorem Tax Representative. In 1965 he resigned to join Dawson Desmond Van Cleve & Associates in Springfield NJ. In 1972 he was elected to a partnership in the firm and in 1983 he converted the partnership into a corporation known as The Nevins Group, where he was CEO and Chairman of the Board. While in New Jersey, Warren served various offices in Hillsborough, including Mayor, as well as Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders (County Commissioners) from 1974 - 1985. In 1985 he was elected Chairman of the County Board of Taxation and served until 1988 when he was appointed Tax Administrator (Chief Appraiser), a position he held until 2001. He retired this position and from The Nevins Group in 2001, and returned to Texas with his wife Joyce. Warren had many interests including woodworking, home repairs, gardening, sled dog racing, and hunting. He and Joyce created a bird sanctuary on their property in Comfort.
Warren is survived by his wife, Joyce Hilton-Nevins; their children, Philip Nevins, Debra LaHatte, Joshua Hilton, and Carlabeth Biggs; grandchildren, Eric Nevins, Garettann Nevins, Grayson LaHatte, Megan LaHatte, Brenton Biggs, Travis Biggs, and Joshua Biggs, as well as his siblings, Valerie Dena Cleavenger, Sara Murray, Louis Nevins, and Joseph "Knute" Nevins.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, August 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at St Boniface Episcopal Church, 116 Hwy 87 North in Comfort, followed by a reception for family and friends.
