James Robert Smith

James Robert Smith passed away on July 20, 2014 after a brief illness. He was at his daughter Robin's home in Highland Village, Tx. so he could be with her and his son, David in his final days.
Bob was born on November 7, 1935 in Raleigh Co. W Va. to James W. Smith and Bernice Nolan Smith. He grew up in the Beckley area. Bob graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1953, where he was a member of the State Basketball Championship team.
In 1955 Bob joined the US Air Force. The majority of " Smitty's" career was spent as a security police officer. A couple of highlights during his enlistment was being a member of the Presidential Honor Guard for President Kennedy and as a body guard for Bob Hope during numerous USO shows.
Upon his retirement in 1981 from Myrtle Beach AFB, his commander, Col Larry Barton stated he felt the way Tom Landry did when Roger Staubach announced his retirement.
Bob is survived by daughter Robin and her husband Jeff Isham of Highland Village, Tx and son David and his wife Pam of Perry, Ga. He also leaves behind granddaughter Lindsay and her husband Chris Teague and 2 great-grandchildren, Miles and Harper.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Smith and his wife of 59 1/2 years, Kathalene Foley Smith.
Visitation will be at 10:00 on July 31 at Melton Mortuary in Beckley, W Va. with an 11:00 graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park.
We will miss you so much, but happy that you are now pain free and reunited with mother playing endless rounds of golf.
