HAMPTON - Daniel J. Downes Sr., 70, of Hampton, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Newton Medical Center. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., Mr. Downes grew up in Great Kills, Staten Island, and moved to Crandon Lakes 14 years ago. He was a 1959 graduate of Tottenville High School. A Police Officer for the 9th Precinct, Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York, Mr. Downes retired in 1988 after 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he was the general manager for the South Shore and La Tourette golf clubs, both of Staten Island. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam era. Mr. Downes was a member and co-founder of the Hampton Fire Department, where he also served as the executive treasurer and secretary and was known as the "Money Man." Other memberships included the New York PBA, the Disabled Vets Association, Chapter 122 of Marathon, Fla., and American Legion Post 1000 in Washington, D.C. His hobbies were golf, carpentry and fishing, and he also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. The son of the late Eugene and Anna Kerrigan Downes, Mr. Downes is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marie Downes; two children, Donna Wright of Manalapan and Daniel J. Downes Jr., of Barnegat; one sister, Dorothy Murphy of Staten Island; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church in Swartswood. Visitation will be held Monday, May 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with firemen's services at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
