SPARTA -- Herbert Edward Fowler, 82, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013. Herb was born in Sparta and was a 1948 graduate of Newton High School. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Herb was a 50-year member of the Sparta Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief in 1976. He was a 50-year member of the Harmony Lodge #8 in Andover. Herb worked as an electronics technician for Picatinny Arsenal, retiring in 1985. He was a fire inspector for Sparta Township, retiring in 2009. Herb was a member of the Tally-Ho Sportsman Club and a lifetime member of the NRA. Herbert was an avid hunter, enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers, and appreciated and respected nature. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Ellen (Keene) Fowler; son Craig Fowler; brothers Howard Goble, Ralph Fowler, Raymond Fowler and Harvey Fowler; and sister Eleanor Spangenberg. Herb is survived by his son Thad Fowler; daughter Linda Lagattuta; sisters Ruth Bennett and Beatrice Stevans; brother Kenneth Fowler; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may gather to share memories of Herb on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 4, and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. There will be a 7 p.m. Sparta Volunteer Fire Department service at the funeral home.
