NORTH BERGEN - Michael Bachik, 88, died peacefully at his home Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013. Born April 2, 1925, in Visny Orlick, Czechoslavakia, Michael graduated from Casey Jones School of Aeronautics in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1942 and was assigned to the Air Transport Command, Second Ferry Group. He flew to such places as England, China, Burma, Africa, Iceland and his last mission, Wake Island in the Pacific. After the war, Michael joined Bendix Aviation in Teterboro. He flew the Bendix B-25 for 18 years while they were deploying the First Electric Auto Pilot and Flight Path Control System. He retired after 41 years of service, and was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame in 2004. Michael also was a member of the Aviation Pioneers Quiet Birdmen, and was a VFW Past Commander in Teaneck. Michael is survived by his wife of 28 years, Elke Bachik; his brother, Joe Bachik; his children, Dr. Michael Bachik and his wife, Marilyn, of Carmel, Calif., Richard Bachik and his wife, Cathy, of Elgin, Texas, and his daughter, Nadine Olsen and her husband, Michael, of Frankford Township; and grandchildren, Erik Olsen, Amanda Bachik, Michelle Olsen Nanjero, Jackie Bachik, Sara Bachik, and Vanessa Bachik. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Holy Spirit Orthodox Church in Wantage.
