BENJAMIN Edward Bernard Benjamin, Jr. was born in New Orleans on February 11, 1923, the son of Edward Bernard Benjamin and Blanche Sternberger Benjamin. He attended Metairie Park Country Day School (including as a student in the first year of the school's existence), graduated from the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, and then from Yale University in 1943 (in his accelerated class of 1944). During World War II, after graduation from Field Artillery Officers Candidate School, Field Artillery Advanced School, and Liaison Pilot School, he finished his service in occupied Japan as a First Lieutenant for the U.S. Army Air Corps. He then attended Tulane Law School where he was elected Editor-in-Chief of the Tulane Law Review, and elected a member of Order of the Coif, in the class of 1952. He went to work for the law firm of Wisdom and Stone, where he became a partner in the firm that became Wisdom, Stone, Pigman and Benjamin (later Stone, Pigman, Benjamin, Walther, Wittmann and Hutchinson). After some years he left to join the firm of Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevant, Carrere and Denegre, where he spent the majority of his career. Mr. Benjamin was a well-known author and lecturer in the Tax and Estate Planning fields. He was elected President of what is now known as the American College of Trust and Estate Law (previously, the American College of Probate Counsel), and was the first elected-President of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law. He was elected to the Councils of both the American Bar Association Tax Section and its Real Estate Probate and Trust Law Section, and was one of the only persons to serve on both at the same time. He was a member of the American Law Institute, and of a number other national legal organizations. He was an elected Vestry member of Trinity Church (Episcopal) and was elected to be its Chancellor, as which he served for 19 years. He was later elected as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, as which he also served for 19 years. He was also elected President of both Junior Achievement and the Salvation Army Board, and was a member of a number of clubs and carnival organizations. Mr. Benjamin is survived by his dearly-beloved wife, the former Adelaide Wisdom, their four children: Edward Wisdom Benjamin, (his wife, the former Helaine Higgins, and their children Mary Elizabeth Benjamin, Edward Wisdom Benjamin, Jr., Glen Higgins Benjamin, and Joan Caroline Benjamin); Mary Dabney Benjamin (her husband James Scott Williamson and their children Haley Benjamin Williamson and Amy Benjamin Williamson); Ann Leith Benjamin (her husband John Peter Hill and their children Gareth Griffin Hill and Oliver Benjamin Hill); and Stuart Minor Benjamin (his wife Arti Kaur Rai and their children Sophia Rai Benjamin and Anna Rai Benjamin). Also survived by his brothers, William Mente Benjamin (wife, Joan Durland), and Jonathan Sternberger Benjamin (wife, Patricia Bain), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1329 Jackson Ave, New Orleans, La. 70130 on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM. Interment at Metairie Cemetery. Mr. Benjamin's family and friends, my prayers are with you all for the loss of Mr. Benjamin. He always had a smile on his face and remembering him at his law firm. What a wonderful courageous life he led and a wonderful Orbituary. He is now at peace in Heaven above to watch over his family and friends. God Bless Mr. Benjamin.
