Donald Clarence Sund Obituary
Donald Clarence sund Born: June 4, 1931 Died: J anuary 9, 2014 Donald, beloved husband of Evelyn Sund, passed away on Thursday, January 9th, 2014. Born and raised in Crystal Lake, Illinois, Don completed his undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Illinois. He went on to earn a master 's degree in astronomy at UCLA. In 1953, he met Evelyn and they married just four months later. They soon moved to southern California, where they would raise three daughters and enjoy 60 happy years of marriage. A real "rocket scientist", Don worked at the Marquardt Corporation for more than 45 years. Playing a crucial role in American space exploration, he helped design the guidance engines on space shuttles and lunar landers. He always loved camping and hiking, especially in Yosemite National Park and the California coastal redwoods. In retirement he also enjoyed traveling the world and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife Evelyn, sister Marilyn Oerkfitz, brother Robert Sund, three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents Glenn and Marion Sund, and his sister Glenice Sund. Viewing will take place on Friday, January 17th from 5 to 8 PM and the service will be Saturday, January 18th at 1 PM. Both ceremonies will be held at Utter-McKinley San Fernando Mission Mortuary, 11071 Columbus Avenue, Mission Hills, CA 91345. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made toward a memorial redwood grove in northern California.
