Walter Joseph Sieverin, age 81, of McHenry, died Thursday, July 3, 2014, at his home.
He was born May 12, 1933, in Black River Falls, Wisconsin to Frank and Eva (Kaminski) Sieverin. On November 23, 1961, he married Rosemary C. Majoros at St. Philomena Church in Chicago.
A resident of McHenry County for 36 years, Walter was raised on the family farm in Sheldon. While growing up, he attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, and then worked on the family farm before entering the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service ended, he chose to go back to school to pursue studies in engineering. He attended Milwaukee School of Engineering, where he received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He also received a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois.
Walter enjoyed a career as a research engineer at American Can Co. in Barrington, and retired from his full time employment in 1997. He continued to work on engineering design for solar water heaters, and held several patents. He also worked on the design and build of a log splitter, also holding a patent on his design.
Memberships included St. Mary Church in McHenry, the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 188, and the American Legion Post 491 in McHenry, and several professional engineering societies.
Walter enjoyed gardening, and spending his summers in Sheldon for the past 16 years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rosemary; six children, Annette (Michael) O'Brien of Des Plaines, Monica (Robert) Manfredini of Libertyville, Nicholas (Kim) Sieverin of McHenry, Mary (Jim Pavesic) Sieverin of Machesney Park, Stephen (Crystaline) Sieverin of Posen, Ellen (George) Frisch of Genoa City, WI; 13 grandchildren, Kevin, Kathleen, Stephen, and Sean O'Brien, Theresa, Paul, Audrey, and Natalie Manfredini, Matthew Sieverin, Christopher and Christian Sieverin, Catherine and Bernadette Frisch; and two sisters, Julia Osolinski and Helen (the late Mathias) Scherr.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Daniel; and two sisters, Polly and Victoria.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass on Friday, July 11, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1401 N. Richmond Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 13, 2014, at St. John's Catholic Church in Sheldon.
