Conrad James Engelder, age 83, a resident of Valparaiso since 1958, formerly of Detroit, MI, passed away July 24, 2014 at Regency Hospital in Portage. He was born November 7, 1930 in Detroit, MI to Conrad John Henry and Ruth Laura Mathilda (Linsenmann) Engelder. Conrad received his BA from Wayne State University in 1952, MA in History in 1953, MA in Geography in 1956, and his PhD in History from the University of Michigan in 1964. He was a Professor of History and taught at Valparaiso University for 37 years, retiring in 1995. Conrad was an avid genealogy enthusiast, having researched and completed volumes of books for his own family dating back to about 1650. He enjoyed stamp collecting, was a lifelong member of the Organization of American Historians as well as several other historical societies, and was a member of Heritage Lutheran Church. On October 23, 1954 in Detroit, he married Lorraine Wilke who preceded him in death in 2011. On May 21, 1972 in Farmington, MI, he married Sydelle (Timm) Eicher who also preceded him in death in 1990. Survivors include two sons: Steven (Michelle) Engelder of Kokomo, IN, Mark (Olivia) Engelder of Richmond, TX; three step-sons: Scott Eicher of Charlotte, NC, Tim Eicher of Cody, WY, John Eicher of Windermere, FL; two brothers: Theodore Engelder of Lynchburg, VA, Paul (Lorraine) Engelder of Laguna Woods, CA; grandchildren: Morgan (Jordan) Mitchell, Jack and Garrett Engelder; several step grandchildren and faithful caregiver and friend, Jan Zwolinski. Visitation will be held Monday, July 28, 2014 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso with services starting at 1:00 PM, Rev. Joseph Ostafinski officiating with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso. Memorials may be made to Heritage Lutheran Church. MoellerFuneralHome.com
