FLORIDO A. FILIPPINI "FLIP" Florido A. Filippini, 96, passed away peacefully at 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Sterling House in Kokomo, IN. He was born in Bessemer, MI on February 12, 1916, the son of Angelo and Ida (Chiodini) Filippini. On October 27, 1945 he married Loretta (Fallucci) in Detroit, MI and she preceded him in death on January 15, 2000. Florido graduated from A.D. Johnson High School, Bessemer, MI in May 1933. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC's) aka "Roosevelt's Tree Army" from 1935-1937 at Camp Mackinaw, MI where he reforested state and national forests in the upper peninsula. He went on to study chemical engineering at Michigan State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1941, and while there he was a member of the National Engineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi. Flip spent his career as a chemical engineer in the pharmaceutical industry retiring from Bayer Corporation in Elkhart, IN after 23 years of service. His memberships included the American Chemical Society, American Pharmaceutical Association, St. Thomas Catholic Church in Elkhart, IN, and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid gardener who loved his tomatoes, cooking, traveling with his wife, and was mechanically gifted making him very handy at fixing things. Surviving are his children: Richard T. (Linda) Filippini of Pewee Valley, KY, Mary M. Filippini of San Francisco, CA, James L. Filippini (Terry Wetz) of Elmhurst, IL, Robert J. Filippini of New York, NY, Anne M. (Randy) Overbey of Valparaiso, IN, Mark Filippini of Seattle, WA, and Elizabeth E. (Robert) Fessenden of Kokomo, IN; grandchildren: Amy Moore, Alison Haggard, Marcus Filippini, Christopher Overbey, Megan Overbey, Adam Fessenden, Jackson Fessenden, Keegan Fessenden, and Parker Fessenden; great grandchildren: Joie Filippini, Lilly Moore, and Linus Haggard. Preceded in death by his parents, and his wife. A memorial service is being held at a later date in the Detroit, MI area, and burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
