HONORABLE GERALD N. SVETANOFF CROWN POINT, IN
Gerald N. Svetanoff peacefully passed away while surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Jerry was born to the late Naum and Kazimira Svetanoff in the Glen Park area of Gary, IN on December 10, 1935. He graduated from Lew Wallace High School. Jerry earned his degrees from the Indiana University School of Business and the Law School at Bloomington. Following his graduation from law school, he was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1960. He then served as a law clerk with the Supreme Court of Indiana in Indianapolis. Thereafter, Jerry practiced as an attorney in the business sector and as an attorney in the private practice of law in Gary with emphasis on appellate matters. He also undertook graduate work in law at the Northwestern University Law School in Chicago. Since 1981, Jerry served as a judge in the Civil Division of the Superior Court and had been serving as the senior judge of that division. Jerry was a graduate of the Indiana Judicial College. He was highly respected by attorneys that practiced before him and his fellow judges. Jerry belonged to many legal organizations including the Indiana State Bar Association and Lake County Bar Association. His success inspired his son, Joseph to follow him into the legal profession. Jerry is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Joseph (Cathy) Svetanoff; proud grandfather (dedo) to Alexander and Natalia Svetanoff. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Margaret (Norman) Wadman; nieces and nephews: Wayne (Marilynn) Svetanoff; Michael (Paula) Rukavina; Cheryl (late Paul) DeHaven; Kathy (George) Steele and Michael Wadman and their children. Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Walter (late Rose); and sisters: Wanda (late George) Stevens and Rose Marie (late Michael) Rukavina. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 12, 2014 from 2:00- 8:00 PM at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN 46307 with a Prayer Service officiated by the Very Rev. Pope Tome Stamatov at 7:00 PM. Funeral service officiated by the Very Rev. Pope Tome Stamatov will be Monday, January 13, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Burns Funeral Home.
