GEORGE R. BROKEMOND FORMERLY OF EAST CHICAGO, IN George R. Brokemond, born September 20, 1935 in Louise, MS to the late George Sr. and Willa Brokemond, passed away November 8, 2013.He was the oldest and only boy of three children. George received his initial education in East Chicago where he graduated from E.C. Washington High School in 1954. He excelled in both baseball and football, but chose to accept a football scholarship to the University of Illinois in Champaign- Urbana, IL where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business and Finance. George started off his career in banking at the Bank of Indiana, Gary, IN. He then moved to Houston, TX where he was employed at the Riverside Bank. George came back to Chicago to work first at Seaway National Bank and then on to co-found the Highland Community Bank in 1970. He worked his way up to President and then CEO of Highland Community Bank. Highland Community is presently the second largest black-owned commercial bank in Illinois. In 2007, George was inducted into the East Chicago Football Hall of Fame. His greatest passions were his children, football, and reading the newspapers from cover to cover. George leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Taffy; children: Christopher (Shay) Brokemond of South Holland, IL, Crystal Semmes of Houston, TX, Derrick Van Der Poole of Chicago, IL, and Megan (Ignacio) Ponce of Chicago, IL; sisters: Beatrice (Richard) Pryor and Francine (Laden, Sr.) Elliott both of Gary, IN; aunt, Betty Jordan of Gary, IN; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many relatives and friends. Viewing Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Wake will be on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 from 10:00- 11:00 a.m. at Cage Memorial Chapels, 7651 S. Jeffery Blvd., Chicago, IL. Funeral immediately following.
