HUGH D. BRAUER CHICAGO, IL Hugh D. Brauer, age 83, of Chicago and formerly of Munster, died peacefully at home on September 7, 2013. Loving husband for 58 years of Charlotte. Devoted father of Rhonda (Greg Holch) Brauer of New York City, the late Judy Brauer, and Laura (Seth Madorsky) Brauer of Chicago. Adoring grandfather of Jillian and Justin Holch and Isabelle and Sylvia Madorsky. Hugh practiced law in Northwest Indiana for over 50 years. He attended East Chicago Washington High School and Indiana University for his undergraduate and law school education. He served in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army. He had a long history of public service in northwest Indiana, including membership on the Munster Police Commission and on the Munster Town Council for 12 years. Hugh was very active in the Gary Artists League and was a longtime supporter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He received the Paul Harris Award from Rotary International in recognition of his years of dedicated service. He was an active member of Temple Israel in Gary. Hugh enjoyed tennis, running, travel, theater and music. He was a lifelong cubs fan, but his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren. Services will be held at Kish Funeral Home , 10000 Calumet Ave. in Munster, on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 12:30 PM, with visitation at 11:30 AM. Burial at Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park, IL following the service. The family will welcome friends on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Laura Brauer's home in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Hugh's memory to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra ( or to Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center (
