John "Jack" Charles Cunningham of the Indiana Veteran's Home in Lafayette, Indiana died on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the hospital after two years on dialysis. Jack was born in Gary, IN on September 9, 1934 to Lucy Towner Cunningham and Richard Spears Cunningham. (Both deceased.) Jack grew up attending the Eastside United Presbyterian Church in Gary, IN. He graduated from Wirt High School in Gary in 1951. He became an electrical apprentice at U.S. Steel until he voluntarily joined the U.S. Army right before the end of the Korean War, serving most of his time in Germany. After being honorably discharged, he returned to U.S. Steel in 1957. He then began his college career at Indiana University Bloomington, studying Personal Finance. He graduated from IU in 1961, returning to U.S. Steel in management. He sold Pay Masters and then worked in insurance with American United Life and Indianapolis Life. He revised his Chartered Life Underwriters degree and taught at IU Northwest. He was active in the Portage JCs and Exchange Club. He belonged to the Evangelical Covenant Church in Portage. He loved playing golf. In the early 1990s, Jack moved west to Las Vegas, California, and Arizona until returning to Indiana in 1995. He worked and resided in Indianapolis, IN until retiring to the Indiana Veteran's Home in the mid 2000s. Jack is survived by his three daughters: Debbie Niksch of Gary, Leslie (Rene') Trischler of Alexandria, VA, and Cathleen (Shaun) Busick of Zionsville, IN. Jack is also survived by his grandchildren: Katie, Ben, and Kim Niksch, Bill, John, and Sam Trischler, Drew Busick, and former wife, Barbara Cunningham Byrum. He is also survived by sister, Bette (Dave) Phoenix of Bloomington, IL; and brothers: Bob (Jeannie) Cunningham of Phoenix, AZ and Larry Cunningham of Porter, IN; and several nieces and nephews. John's body will be cremated and his remains will rest at the Indiana Veteran's Home cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will take place at the Indiana Veteran's Home, 3851 N. River Rd., West Lafayette, IN 47906-3762, on Sunday, July 7, 2013 with a light luncheon starting at 12:30 PM at the Chapel on the IVH grounds with a celebration of Jack's life following at 2:00 PM.
