In loving memory of John Lescak, who passed away May 5, 2013. John was born in East Chicago on May 11, 1923 to Michael and Theresa Lescak. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, who loved and cherished his family and friends and always put them first. John loved all sports, teaching and being with young people. He was Byzantine Catholic and active in the Church. John lived most of his life in Whiting, IN, but spent the last year living with his son Jon and his family in Danville, IL. John was married to Alma (Vodde) Lescak (deceased) on August 8, 1959 at St. Basil's Byzantine Catholic Church in East Chicago. John and Alma were blessed with a son, Jon 'Janko' Christopher Lescak (Denise Fischer), and two grandchildren: Harrison and Catherine, of Danville, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents: Michael and Theresa Lescak; brothers: Joseph and Michael; and sisters: Anne, Mary, and Julie. He is survived by his sister, Theresa (Robert) Bucko of Munster; and sisters-in-law: Doris (late Joseph) Lescak of Highland and Jean (late Michael) Lescak of East Chicago. John was a member of the 1940 class of East Chicago Roosevelt High School. He competed on the cross country team, winning the state championship in 1940. He was a member of the East Chicago Kiwanis baseball team, winning the state championship in 1940. John graduated from Indiana University in 1949 with a degree in Physical Education. While attending IU, he played baseball, ran track and cross county, and participated in ROTC. He began his teaching career at Riley Elementary in East Chicago. He coached basketball and track. There he met the girls PE teacher, Alma Vodde, who became his wife. He also taught at Lincoln Elementary School. John retired after 36 years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. from Fife Funeral Home, 4201 Indianapolis Blvd., East Chicago and 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary Byzantine Church, 2001 Clark Street, Whiting with Father Stephen Muth officiating. Burial to follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Hammond. Visitation Friday, May 10, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. with a Panachida service at 4:00 p.m. at Fife Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church. Please refrain from sending flowers. John grew up during the depression. As he would say, "Buy yourself something to eat. At least you can say you ate something."
