Melvin P. Nicholas, age 67, of Crown Point, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in Florida. He retired and was a member of the International Union Local 150 of Operating Engineers ('Long Boom') for 49 years. Melvin was preceded in death by his his parents: Melvin A. and Margaret Nicholas. He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 46 years, Veronica; daughter, Dawn Marie Wilson; three grandchildren: Nicholas, Logan, and Kylie Wilson; his dear sister, Mary Margaret (nee Nicholas) Houldson; and dear brother, Michael Douglas (Lori) Nicholas. His passions were his daughter, grandchildren, dogs, Beethoven and Harley. He loved auctions, his Harleys, and had many hobbies. He was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32nd Degree South Bend and Lake Lodge No. 157, Hobart Elks Lodge 1152, and Loyal Order of Moose, Monticello, IN. Friends may visit with Mel's family on Monday, May 13, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Funeral services will be held Tuesday May 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, with Rev. Howard Cleveninger officiating. Interment Memory Lane Memorial Park, Schererville, IN. Masonic memorial service will be held on Monday at 6:30 p.m. with an Elks service immediately following.
