Richard Allen Orlich, 88, a resident of Bettendorf, IA, formerly of Munster/East Chicago, IN passed away in the presence of loving family on December 12, 2012. Part of the "Greatest Generation", he was born in East Chicago, IN to Sam and Bessie Orlich on November 21, 1924. Surviving both the Depression and early deaths of both parents, Rich found family in many classmates and friends in the "harbor". A 1941 graduate of East Chicago Washington, "the Big O" excelled in multiple sports, primarily football. He joined the U.S. Navy and attended their Naval Training School at the University of Wisconsin in 1942 and went on to become Radioman 2nd Class. He served four years during WWII, mostly on the USS DuPage before returning to Indiana. Randomly paired in a bowling tournament, he met and later married the love of his life, Sophie Grynecki. They had seven children, while principally living in Munster and enjoying a successful career at Inland Steel spanning almost 40 years. He was member of VFW, and volunteered many hours with the Boy Scouts and as Little League coach. Many of his retirement years were spent in Bella Vista, AR, where "Mr. Congeniality" made many lifelong friends. He will be remembered for his unwavering values, sharp sense of humor (some misinterpreted as sarcasm), diehard Packer fan, passion for family, bowling, golf (watch out for wet sand!) and fishing. Rich is survived by wife of 57 years, Sophie of Bettendorf, IA; children: Rich Jr. and Carol of Coppell, TX, Patricia of Billings, MT, Nancy of Bettendorf, IA, Jim of West Bend, WI, Ken and Tricia of Dallas, TX, Karen and Al Mora of Munster, IN, and Janet and Jeff Prieboy of Munster, IN; grandchildren: Jimmy, Alesondra, Sophie, Annie, Jake, Emily, Drew, and Nick; a great grandchild, Sienna Rae; and a sister-in-law, Betty. Rich was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Orlich.
