Steve was the second of two children to Stephen and Julia (nee Mac) Zabrecky of Whiting where he grew up and helped his father at St. John's Parish. After graduating from Catholic Central (now Bishop Noll) in 1944, he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1948 from St. Joseph College in Rensselaer with degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. Stephen married Helena Bridget Jancosek in 1949 and relocated to Griffith in 1956 to raise his family. He had four children (one son and three daughters): George (Barbara), Debbie, Denyce. and Cathy. He has six grandchildren (three grandsons, three granddaughters), and three great grandchildren. Steve worked at Inland Steel from 1955 as a foreman in the Power Department until he retired. During this time he obtained his Ham radio license, was an avid amateur photographer, became a member of the Calumet Astronomical society and designed and built several telescopes and the Foucault device to calibrate them, took flying lessons, and rode motocross on his Yamaha IT. In retirement he embraced new technology taking computer classes at Purdue University, made stained glass, and rode with the South Chicago Wheelmen. Steve was also a member of the Calumet Crank Club and rode his bicycle in a Double Century at age 61 (200 continuous miles in 24 hours). He enjoyed classical piano music, vacations in Florida, and monthly meetings with fellow retirees from Inland. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded into heaven by his father, Stephen; mother, Julia; sister, Millie; devoted wife, Helena; and daughter, Cathy.
