Sharon Laczi (nee Friend), age 67 of Ogden Dunes, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Richard; daughter, Dr. Barbara (Jacob) Lemley of Portage; granddaughter, Adele; sister, Bonnie Kaiser of Schererville; and nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents: Leonard and Charlotte Friend; brother, Leonard Friend, Jr. Sharon was a member of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, Portage. She was a graduate of Hammond Morton High School, Class of 1963. Sharon was an exceptionally talented person. She enjoyed golf, bowling, and softball. At age 14, she won the 19-under Hammond Civic Center ping-pong championship, becoming the only female to do so at the time. She was also an accomplished tap dancer and had a beautiful singing voice. Sharon had been accepted to Indiana University to study music and drama. After her father's death when she was 17, she abandoned her dream of attending college and her ultimate goal of becoming a Broadway actress in order to care for her mother. Sharon performed locally with the Marian Theater Guild in Whiting in many musicals, including “Damn Yankees”, “Annie, Get Your Gun”, and “Guys and Dolls”. She worked in Inland Steel's Accounting Department, retiring after 30 years. During this time, she joined Inland's Ski Club and enjoyed skiing in Michigan, Wisconsin and Europe. It is also where she met the love of her life, her husband, Richard. After her retirement from Inland, she worked for several years as a patient registrar at the Portage Hospital and Porter Urgent Care Center in Chesterton, IN. Sharon was a fan of the Chicago Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawks. She was also an avid cook and fan of the Food Network. She had a quick wit and her sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her. Family and friends may call at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service, 2700 Willowcreek Rd., Portage on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday, November 15, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. from Pruzin Brothers Chapel and 10:00 a.m. from Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, 2949 Willowcreek Rd., Portage with the Rev.
