WILLIAM "BILL" SUTHERLAN SMITH ST. JOHN, IN

William "Bill" Sutherland Smith, age 87, late of St. John, IN, passed away Thursday April 24, 2014. Beloved husband of Marie Ann "Sis" Runfeldt Smith (nee Sheehan). Loving father of Michael W. Smith of Chicago, IL. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Bill is also survived by many friends. Preceded in death by his parents William C. and May Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps - WWII. Bill also served in the U.S. Air Force and the Air Force Reserves as a 2nd Lieutenant. He graduated from Hammond High School and went on to the Indiana University receiving a bachelor's degree in Science. While at Indiana he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Bill also played varsity football from 1948 - 1950 earning 2nd team All American honors in 1950. He was inducted into the Hammond Indiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Bill worked in the insurance industry with Equitable Life. He was a member of Elks Club. Visitation Monday, May 12, 2014 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral Services Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. from the Elmwood Funeral Chapel 11300 W. 97th Ln. (1/2 block west of US 41/Wicker Ave. at 97th Ln.) St. John to St. John the Evangelist Church - Day Chapel (Corner of 93rd and U.S.41). Mass of Christian Burial 10:00. Interment private.
