ARTHUR MODELL Obituary

MODELL--Arthur B. With the most profound sadness, we mourn the passing of our beloved Uncle Artie. The love, respect and admiration we had for our incredible uncle can not be expressed adequately in these few short sentences. He was a beacon of strength and love for our family. Our mom and dad, his sister Pansy Modell Bloom and his brother-in-law Bernard Bloom, who predeceased him, showed us the mutual love and concern siblings can have for one another. We will miss you Uncle Artie. May your name be a blessing! Peggy and David Gershon and Family, Robin and David Gelles and Family, Heidi and Kenneth Glass and Family

for ARTHUR MODELL

Not sure what to say?

Art Modell still owned the Cleveland Browns when the team held training camp next to Lakeland Community College. Since I worked part-time for the College, I had the opportunity to watch practice when Marty Schottenheimer was head coach. It was an education!
I am not a Clevelander (my family is from Pittsburgh and rooted for the hated Steelers). But my wife was raised there, and I've always wanted the Browns to do well.
In my view, Mr. Modell should be inducted posthumously into the NFL Hall of Fame. It's time to recognize the obvious--the Cleveland politicians of his time left him no choice, and the NFL should quit placating those who refuse to see it.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Modell family. Losing a parent is never easy. Mr. Modell contributed a lot to football, but I'm sure his sons would say his biggest contribution was being a father. Just know that God is with you to help heal your heart, and He promises

While I never got to know Mr. Modell personally I remember well that he always went to the trouble to answer the door in person on Halloween every year. He made a special effort to entertain and engage the little kids--my son included.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Modell but he sponsored me through middle&high schools (St. Ignatius and St. Frances). By attending private school kept me out of trouble and made me focus on what I wanted to do in life. I just wanted to take this time to say thank you so much for what you and your wife did for me. I didn't get a chance to go to college but I do have 2 parttime jobs (FedEx&Underarmour). Thank you again for looking for me. I would not be where I am if it were not for you.

September 10, 2012

My deepest sympathies to both John and David. I don't know if you remember, from Waite Hill, but my mom, Faye Poje, worked for your family (in the 80's) and thought the world of your parents. My mom passed away this year too, in May. She was saddened to hear about your Mother's passing and I know she would have felt the same about your father.

Many years ago, your parents donated a signed Browns football and Greg Pruitt tear away game jersey for my kids' school carnival. I'll never forget the kindness your parents showed to, not only my mom, but to me and my family too.

We still have the thank you note your father sent in '83 after his Quadruple By-Pass surgery. I had only sent a get well card, but he let no gesture go by without acknowledging it. He was a very kind and generous man.

Again, please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

The people of Cleveland lost a very gifted and generous person. He and his wife were responsible for supporting the Cleveland Clinic which indirectly saved hundreds of people's lives over the years yet he only seems to be remembered for the moving of the Cleveland Browns football team which was responsible for him personally loosing millions of dollars for many years. I want to offer my sympathy to his familiy and friends and I want to let them know that some people from Ohio realize how great a person he really was. A life is worth more than a sport in many people's oppinion.

Art Modell was described as controversial. We'd describe him as a visionary. Long before he made the difficult, even heartbreaking, decision to move the Cleveland Browns team to Baltimore, he was among the first to recognize and embrace the impact television could – and did – have on NFL football. Along with Baltimore Colts' owner Carroll Rosenbloom and Pittsburgh Steelers' owner Art Rooney, Modell agreed to move his Cleveland Browns' team to the American Football Conference in 1970, following the merger of the NFL and AFL.

Even his most controversial decision – to move his franchise – left the Browns' history and heritage in Cleveland and brought an NFL team to football-starved Baltimore, which had lost its own team some 12 years earlier. Today, for example, thanks to Art Modell's vision, Jim Brown is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a Cleveland Brown – not a Baltimore Brown.

We will remember him as a good and decent man who contributed greatly to the NFL, to Baltimore and Cleveland, to the communities in which he lived, to the charities in which he believed, and – perhaps most of all – to the active and retired players whom he loved, for whom he showed compassion and whom he treated as his family. He truly embraced the league's past, present and future.

We deeply regret that neither Art nor his wife Pat lived long enough to see him enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

You did much good for the city of Cleveland. Many charities and foundation were helped by your generous and giving hand. You did so quietly and you never gave a donation with the intent of having your name placed on a building to tell everyone of your generosity either.. You were a man with a lot of class and modesty. To The Modell Family:

I had the honor and privilege to meet Art Modell on several occasions, during the tenure of Head Coach Sam Rutigliano. The first time I met Art was at Browns training camp at Kent State. He really took the time to get to know me and know about my experiences in the NFL with Washington and New Orleans. As a former co-worker and friend of Sam's, Art made me feel like a part of the Browns family when he saw me.

The last time I saw Art (and his wife Pat) was when I attended the Browns game in Seattle in '78. He talked with me on the bus ride to practice at the University of Washington and was kind and generous to invite me to a private dinner that evening at the top of the Space Needle. When it came time to check out the next day from the hotel, I learned that Art had picked up my bill!

Only those who truly got to know Art, even for the shortest time can appreciate what he meant to the Browns organization, his family and others. And his wife Pat, who I met just once, was also one of the finest and most graceful women I've ever met.

Art's contributions to the NFL and to charities in Cleveland and Baltimore were more than most. It demonstrated an unselfishness not found in many.

My condolences to your family and to quote from the classic film, "It's a Wonderful Life", "no man is a failure, who has friends". Art Modell had many friends.
