LAURENTS--Arthur. The Dramatists Guild Council mourns the passing of Council member Arthur Laurents, who died at age 93 on May 5, 2011. A prolific playwright, screenwriter and director, Arthur's theatrical legacy is guaranteed by his books for two of the most influential and iconic musicals in American theater history, "West Side Story" and "Gypsy," as well as ground-breaking plays such as "Home of the Brave." Arthur was also an extraordinary mentor and supporter of young writers, and many including myself have been the grateful beneficiaries of his creative generosity. Elected to the Guild's Council in 1946, Arthur was a staunch and tireless advocate for the rights of writers everywhere. We will miss his uncompromising passion, and we celebrate his achievements that will live on forever. Stephen Schwartz, President Dramatists Guild of America
