ROBERTS--George H., III, 85, died at The Cypress, Hilton Head Island, SC on Friday, April 11th. George was born in Brooklyn, NY to Dr. George H. Roberts, Jr. and Alma Gordon Roberts. A graduate of The Hotchkiss School and Rutgers University, George served in the U.S. Army as an officer in the First Guided Missile Corps, Artillery. He graduated from NYU Law School and passed the New York State Bar in 1956. It was at NYU that he and Estelle Scrobogna met, and they were married in NYC in 1955. Following graduation, George embarked on his 34 year-long career with Citibank where he ran the Corporate Banking Group's Chemical Department and served as a senior banker. He became Region Head in the World Corporation Group, retiring in 1991. George and Estelle raised their family on Long Island, living in Lloyd Harbor for 32 years. George was a quintessential Long Island commuter. He was an active community leader, serving as Chairman of the Huntington American Red Cross, Chairman of the Huntington Parks Committee, Treasurer of the Cold Spring Harbor Library and a member of Huntington Hospital Board of Governors and its Finance Committee. For many years, he was also an active Trustee of the Huntington Country Club. Upon retiring to Hilton Head, George led the restructuring of Moss Creek Plantation serving, among other things, as Treasurer and President. He mentored many, frequently advising on personal and professional matters. George was a loving partner and father, known for his positive wit and moral compass. He and Estelle traveled extensively, cherishing the opportunity to experience new places and cultures together. George was an avid sailor and life-long golfer who enjoyed time spent at The Creek in Locust Valley; National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock in Southampton; and the Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club. George is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Estelle S. Roberts, their two daughters, Catherine Roberts Casalicchio (Piero) of Huntington, NY; Patricia Roberts Winton (Nick) of Boston, MA; grandchildren George, Brando, Cristina Casalicchio; Hank, Fuller, Lucia, Charlotte Winton; son-in-law Carlos Madrid; his sister, Dr. Ann Stewart, and brother-in-law, Dr. William Durant. George was predeceased by his adored daughter, Elizabeth Stacey Roberts, and his sister, Barbara Gavigan Hershberger. A celebration of George's life will be held at Moss Creek Plantation, Hilton Head, South Carolina on June 14, 2014.
