VIDAL--Gore. The American Academy of Arts and Letters notes with sorrow the death of our esteemed colleague. In all his writing, he had a singular purpose -- to tell the truth. He had the gifts of a broad perspective on American history and culture, a sharp wit, an elegant scorn, and a large-hearted sense of his responsibilities as both author and citizen. Death may have stilled his voice, but not his insight and effect.
