PAYTON--John A. The Board of Directors and staff of the American Civil Liberties Union are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear colleague and friend, John A. Payton. Our nation has truly lost a brilliant warrior for justice. John was a superb litigator who helped educate the wider civil liberties community about the dangerous threats to hard-fought civil rights gains. We extend our condolences to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund staff and board, and to John's wife, Gay McDougall, a world-renowned human rights activist of whom he was so proud. John A. Payton will be sorely missed.
