FONTAINE--John C. The trustees and staff of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation mourn the passing of the Foundation's esteemed Chairman Emeritus, John Clovis ("Jack") Fontaine. With gentle wisdom and inspired leadership, Jack profoundly shaped the course of the Foundation's history over many years. His abiding contribution to the Foundation's mission is embodied in the endowed Kress-Fontaine fund for Scholarly Publications on European Works of Art in the Classical Tradition at the National Gallery of Art. Jack was committed to the highest standards of excellence in the arts, and in the course of his exemplary career, he also played leadership roles at the National Gallery of Art, the Salzburg Global Seminar, the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, the Florida Philharmonic, and the law firm of Hughes Hubbard & Reed. Jack remained a trusted friend and advisor until the end. We are honored to have known him and send our deepest condolences to his family.
