GATES--John Sanford, age 95, of Lake Forest, Illinois passed away on August 20, 2013. Born in Billings Montana, he was the son of Everett C. Gates and Edith H. Gates. In life, he was surrounded by the joy of his family and his ever loving wife of 62 years, Christine S. Gates. John was a graduate of Montana State University. He served our country in World War II as a United States Army Colonel in various campaigns throughout Burma and China - including the opening of the Burma Road. He then went onto The Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania, where he met his future wife Christine. He spent his career in the investment world, where he held senior management positions at Allied Chemical, Marsh and McClennan and Smith Barney, from which he retired at age 88. His primary philanthropic interests were in education. He and his wife established The Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth at Lake Forest College. He is survived by his son John S. Gates, Jr. (Weezie), Susan Gates Cooper (Bill), Sarah Gates Colley (Bryan) and his grandchildren: John S. Gates III, Edward H. Gates, Thomas J. Gates, Ellen M. Cooper, Kaitlin L. Cooper, Christine L. Colley and Benjamin G. Colley. A memorial service will be held at 11am, on Saturday, August 24th at The Church of The Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster, Lake Forest, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by The Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth at Lake Forest College, 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, Illinois 60045.
