HIJUELOS--Oscar. The City University of New York deeply mourns the passing of Oscar Hijuelos, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and alumnus of The City College of New York, BA '75, MA '76. The son of Cuban immigrants who raised their family in West Harlem, Mr. Hijuelos was inspired to succeed at CUNY colleges, first taking classes at Bronx Community College, where a literature professor's positive feedback kindled an interest in writing. Mr. Hijuelos entered City College through the then-new SEEK program. Delivering CCNY's President's Lecture last December, entitled "Coming Home to City College," Mr. Hijuelos credited CUNY for giving him the educational opportunities that nurtured his life as a writer. His outstanding achievements are an inspiration to us all. Our deepest sympathies go to his wife, Lori Ann Carlson, family and friends. Benno Schmidt, Chairperson CUNY Board of Trustees William P. Kelly, Interim Chancellor
