NEUWIRTH--Robert S., 80, pioneer in reproductive health, passed away peacefully on December 17th. Born in Floral Park, Long Island, he graduated from Yale College magna cum laude ('55) and Yale School of Medicine ('58). He trained at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Luke's Roosevelt from 1971 to 1991, and as the first Babcock Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the College of Physicans and Surgeons of Columbia University from 1977 to 2000. He was known for having introduced laparascopy and hysteroscopy to the United States in the late 1960s, and as the inventor of balloon endometrial ablation, a technique to control menorrhagia and avoid hysterectomy, one of many innovative medical techniques he patented. His family will most remember him for his caring love, generosity and guidance. He is survived by five children Susan, Jessica, Laura (Adam), Michael (Deena) and Alexander (Madalyn), his former wife Gloria, and six grandchildren - Madelyn, Ethan, James, Sarah, Bennett and Juliette. A memorial service will be held December 20 at 10am at Campbell Funeral Chapel, NYC.
