CHU--Samuel C Dr., of Columbus, OH. March 25, 1929 - August 30, 2013. An unexpected but peaceful passing, after a fulfilling academic and personal life. Born in Shanghai, son of General Shih-Ming Chu and Madame Grace Zia Chu. Raised in Bethesda, MD in the early 1940's after the family's arrival in the United States. Educated at Dartmouth College (AB) and Columbia University (MA and PhD). Professor of East Asian Studies, Ohio State University (1969-1995). Retired as History Professor Emeritus 1995. Survived by wife of 56 years Lucy K. Chu, brother Daniel (Lenore Schiff), his children Elaine Chu (Elliot Fan), Laura Chu Stokes (Jimmy Stokes) and Jonathan (Sumana Kesh) and five grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, September 28, at 2pm in Columbus, OH at North Broadway United Methodist Church. A memorial donation may be made in Samuel Chu's name to Paul Dusseau, MD Endowment Fund, c/o Ohio Health Foundation , 180 East Broad St., 31st floor, Columbus, OH 43215.
