for Walter Cronkite

Not sure what to say?

Walter's and my common ancestor was Peter Joseph Greif, who was born in St. Wendel, Saarland, Germany in 1809.
He came to this country around 1854 and died in Michigan in 1876.
He had five children. Walter descended from Peter Joseph's oldest child, Helen Greif who married August Renz and they lived for many, many yrs in Levenworth KS.
She was Water's great-grandmother. I descend from Peter Joseph Greif's third child, (Franz Joseph Greif) who settled in Uniontown WA in 1876.

I'm honored to be related to you, to be a huge fan of yours and to have the same birthday as your first born daughter. I've enjoyed watching you throughout the years and I feel privileged to be married to a submarine sailor of whom you reported on during the Three Mile Island disaster. You might be gone, but you'll never be forgotten and as I look at my own son I can see you. What a resemblance. Love you always...

Finally, I can call you the "last true reporter of the news"...honest and believable for every word spoken, every thought represented and every story presented...you were the person I watched every night...I trusted what you said, because it was the truth...and you were able to convey your dedication and conviction of the story at hand. You will probably never know the impression you made on me or the "bar" you set for others that follow, but you will always know in your heart that you were true to your listeners and what you said was correct. I will forever remember the day you reported on the death of President Kennedy...to see the sorrow in your eyes and hear the tremble of your voice was more than I could bear..it is etched upon my heart forever. You are a stalwart giant in the news, and will never be replaced by anyone else. May you bring joy to the rest of your comrades in rest as you did to us in life. And that's the way it is..........

A very insightful man, so sorry for your loss. In the scriptures (Isaiah 57:15) we read: "For this is what the High and Lofty One, who is residing forever and whose name is holy, has said: “In the height and in the holy place is where I reside, also with the one crushed and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly ones and to revive the heart of the ones being crushed." These verses are very comforting when we lose a loved one. [email protected]

"The voice of honesty."

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...

I grew up with Walter Cronkite because my mom watched him. she is now 93 with alz. I certainly appreciate his news worthiness, since things have changed drastically. I am very sorry for your loss. We can hope to see our loved ones again, as promised in God's Word, the Bible in John 5: 28,29. Revelation 21:3-5 promises there will no more death, sickness, sorrow.

To The Cronkite Family: I am so sorry he is no longer here with us, but do know that he is still here with us in spirit. I pray that you all will be comforted by these words:

Try to remember that a GOOD man never dies; You will see him many times.
You will feel him in all things that are here out of love, and for love.
The person of a man may leave or be taken away, but the best part of a GOOD man stays. It stays FOREVER!

What sad news to learn that Walter Cronkite has been taken away from us.

His voice, his news reporting, was as solid gold as he personally was.

He left a golden legacy in his private life as well, and he will be missed.

May the angels welcome him, so that he may look down upon all the wonderful memories he left behind.

God bless him!

I was very young when Walter Cronkite was on the news but I liked him even then. Most kids liked cartoons but I just liked Walter. Some of my favorite memories are of my father making me some cereal and turning on the TV so Walter Cronkite was on. He was just familiar and a part of my history. It was like seeing a friend every time the TV was turned on and I liked him. I guess in looking back, it was his warmth and genuineness that came across the air waves. I guess kids pick up on those things. Thanks for the security, good memories, warmth and kindness, Mr. Cronkite. You are part of my history that makes me recall a better more innocent time.

Good night and God bless.

The older I get the more I long for yesterday, yet I know that yesterday is gone and to never to be anymore. The faces of yesterday are being buried one by one. The day of Walter Cronkite's death once again brings us to another goodbye to yesterday. My favorite news anchor from childhood was Walter Cronkite, I came home from school did my homework and watched the evening news as often as I was near a Television set. I remember so vividly him chocking back the tears and removing his glasses as he announced the death of President Kennedy a poignant moment in American History. Mr. Cronkite has been dubbed the most trusted man in news and I truly believe that, that was a very true statement. I missed him when left the anchor desk in 1981 and I still miss him today.

I long for another Walter Cronkite who delivered the news with dignity and refrained from the sound-bite that presently dominates news today. Goodnight Mr. Cronkite and thanks for the memories and we know that we will see you again someday; yet we know not when for we miles yet to travel before we sleep. The world was a better place with you in it and now that you are gone there is a void and that is simply the way it is on this 12th day of September 2009. God Bless the Cronkite Family is my prayer and thank you for sharing your father with all of us......

Walter Cronkite was the bets news anchor CBS-TV has ever had at the newsdesk.since his departre from the CBS-TV newsdesk in 1981,things at the newsdesk weren't the same. When he was at the newsdesk, there were first in the news ratings. But during the first 10 years after departure from the newsdesk,CBS-TV was usually last in the news ratings.those were the factors that made thibgs different.Out of all the people who wera the the CBS-TV newsdesk,Walter Cronkite had the highest standards. He set the newest standards for newscasting while he was at the newsdesk at CBS-TV.out of all the people who worked ath the news desk in the CBS-TV newsroom,Walter Cronkite was the perosn who practiced the highest standards.!

Mr. Cronkite was my mentor. It was my lifetime wish to have met Mr. Cronkite. I met Dan Rather, when he visited Alpine and I conveyed this to him and sent my regards to Mr. Cronkite with Mr. Rather.
My dad, Ben, and I would watch the CBS Evening News together and his Vietnam coverage, which I later served. Mr. Cronkite was my and for many an EDUCATOR and this has not been stressed in his passing. His persona and style of coverage in-bedded in me a desire for awareness and caring of world and national events. I hope some family member reads my note. This will help me, knowing that I have conveyed my feelings to his family of a man that influenced my life. I would have been privileged and honored to have met, Mr. Cronkite. I would have given him an embrace and said, "Gracias for being a positive force in my lifetime."
Thank You,

My seventh grade teacher made our entire class watch the news with Walter Cronkite every night. She would randomly call on several students each day to report on stories on the news. We had to be prepared on all the topics since we didn't know if we would be called on or in what order. During that year I was the most informed I have ever been on world events. I am now 58 and truly felt that I had lost a personal friend when I learned of his death. Thanks to Mrs. Baker(the teacher) and Mr. Cronkite for a very educational year of my life.

Walter Cronkite was the only newsman our family watched on the evening news programs. I was 9 when we lost President Kennedy on November 22, 1963. He was very professional in the way he handled this news for all Americans who were deeply saddened by this tragic event. We also watched his newscasts during the Vietnam War. I had a step-cousin who was over there at that time. Walter also handled the news reports of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy very professionally and in a calm manner. I still remember when I was 15 and our family had lost my grandfather the same weekend of the Apollo 11 moon landing. We did watch this on CBS with Walter Cronkite reporting the history making event as it happened. It lifted our spirits to know that even at this time of sadness in our family, there was still something good to believe in for all of us. Walter had a special way of giving the news with his voice and he raised our hopes even when all of America was hurting during the very saddest times, too. He is greatly missed by so many here. Our condolences to his family. May God give you all comfort and peace that only He can give us all.

You were my boss from 1994-1997. You could run circles around every other employer for whom I have ever worked. You were amazing, and exactly the kind of man I presumed you would be, having known "of you" my entire life. I had the pleasure of knowing your wonderful Betsy, your wonderful children and grandchildren, and several of your friends and well known colleagues. I've partied at your Sutton Place residence, I've slept in your guestroom on the Vineyard, I've dined at your family table. Even if your name had been Johnny Cronkite from Anytown USA, my life is better for having known you. Sleep now, you've worked hard. God Blessed you in this life. Of course, my Grandmother had the big console T.V. with the rabbit ear box on top of it that you would have to turn to get good reception. And each time we were with her we would watch Walter Cronkite talk to the world with such care as if he was everyone's father, brother, uncle or cousin...What a kind man. My Grandmother's been gone since 1984, but throughout the years each time I would see Mr. Cronkite on television it would take me back to being a little girl and the special time I got to spend with my Grandma...I will miss you, too, Mr. Cronkite...Uncle Walter.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Our condolences to Mr. Cronkite's family.

He brought us the news, both good and bad, while we were in the prime of our lives.

I remember my husband holding our newborn son, on my husband's 30th birthday, as we watched the moon landing on the CBS special coverage. We, like Walter, were awed and excited.

We recall the devastation we felt when he brought us the news of the assassinations of President Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy.

The compelling coverage of the Vietnam War riveted us to the CBS Evening News. Mr. Cronkite was a steady, calming voice during an insane war, one our brother and three cousins were involved in.

Yes, Walter Cronkite was a trusted and respected journalist, but we felt like he was a part of our family as we spent time with him every evening. His new's coverage prompted many conversations at our dinner table through the years.

He enriched our lives and we will truly miss him.

Several years ago, I had the honor of chauffeuring Mr. Cronkite for a few days and upon meeting him, he said Hi, I'm Walt. What made him was "he had the touch of the common man." He is now in a new dimension with the Lord. God has rested his soul.

Walter Cronkite what a great and kind man. I met Mr Cronkite at Epcot Center in Flordia at a show. He was so polite and spoke to me just like I was a good friend. He will be greatly missed.

Walter Cronkite was the epitome of a true professional in the field of broadcast journalism..however, he had a human side to that professionalism and that was quite evident when he announced president Kennedy's death in front of a nation in shock. A part of America has been lost with his passing

Walter Cronkite's voice of authority, Which was so enthralling, made everyone stop what they were doing and take notice. He had a special talent for broadcasting the news that, to this day, has not been replaced. He was a gallant, and humble man who told it like it was, not how everyone thought it should be. He will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to his wife and family. I know you have lost a great treasure on earth, but God has gained a jewel in Heaven.

When God calls a loved one "home", He leaves us the gift of memories. May the Cronkite family and all who admired Walter take comfort in this gift.

Mr Cronkite was the BEST TV newsman ever. I remember when he had to announce the death of John Kennedy. My prayers are with the family and how blessed they are to have had this man in their lives and to have shared him with the rest of the world. Thank You!
