Jack N. Johns
Lansing, MI
Jack N. Johns, much loved man of God, went to be in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on March 18th, 2013. Born on March 24, 1939, Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Josephine Johns.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Hope Johns; and four adoring children and spouses: Faith Squires (James), Charity Johns, Joy Wagner (Mike), and Jack Johns Jr. (Marcy); his brother, Jim Johns; and eight beautiful grandchildren, Brooke and Dylan Squires, Emilee, Isabelle, Addison and Quinn Johns, Alethea HoyteJohns, and Jackie Wagner; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Jack attended J. W. Sexton High School, and Michigan State University, prior to finding his true calling as a business man and entrepreneur. Jack always worked. He did everything from selling shoes and Leon's Potato Salad to Insurance. Together with his father and brother, he opened Pro Bowl West in Lansing in 1964, followed by Pro Bowl East, the Bus Stop, and Outer Limits in the 1970s and 1980s. During his lengthy career, Jack touched the lives of many people, including athletes, musicians, and politicians. Those that walked the halls of Pro Bowl East would find the walls lined with pictures of Jack and celebrities such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Tommy Hearns. Jack and his family hosted a brunch for the MSU Men's Basketball team at their home, after they won the NCAA National Championship in 1979. Jack was instrumental in bringing business to Lansing, with Pro Bowl East being home to classic leagues, city tournaments, and even the Women's International Tournament in East Lansing in 1992. Jack spent much of his life and career at Pro Bowl East, where you could often find him behind the counter with his coffee mug in his hand.
He was very charitable, giving to Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, and multiple booster clubs at MSU. Jack was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame on October 11th, 2009 for his meritorious achievements.
He and Hope divided their later years between homes in both Florida and Michigan. While he had many health challenges, his wife made his medical care and social outings plus his favorite Lebanese foods, her top priority. Jack enjoyed live music and the company of numerous friends. He especially enjoyed his lunch time gatherings with the ROMEO's (Retired Old Men Eating Out).
His family describes him as a man's man and an avid golfer, enjoying fellowship at Lansing Country Club, Walnut Hills and Glen Eagle. In 1958 Jack became an original parishioner of St. Gerard's Church at age 19, and was active in Knights of Columbus for many years. Other interests included cars, hunting, fishing, and all of the latest gadgets. Jack loved listening to live music and dancing, having won a few dance contests in his teenage years. Family and friends will remember Jack for his wonderful smile and voice, witty sense of humor, and colorful attire. He was a man of fashion, and his clothes often reflected his jovial personality. Most importantly, Jack loved people. The friends he made, and partnerships he formed, are too numerous to count. Despite his health constraints he still enjoyed all life had to offer, especially his grandchildren.
Visitation with the Rosary was at Tiffany's Funeral Home on Monday, March 25th.
Funeral Liturgy is 10:30 a.m., Tuesday March 26th at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 West Willow, Lansing with Fr. John P. Klein presiding. Luncheon at St. Gerard's following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jack's name to St. Jude's Hospital for Children or Special Olympics.

Hope, please know you are in our prayers. "Esperanza" as Al always called you is "hope" in Spanish and that's exactly what we're praying that we hope you and your family will be fine and remember Jack as a great man who always made sure his place was run right so all his friends and customers had a good time bowling and sharing a good camaraderie. We will never forget our good times at Pro Bowl East.
