Mary L. Gaffney Naples, FL

Mary L. Gaffney, 91, formerly of Brooklyn, NY and Wilmington, NC, passed away suddenly on Monday, July 28, 2014.

Mary, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, was one of six children born to Mary and Joseph Gaffney. She is a graduate of St. John's University and received her Master's Degree in English Literature at New York University. Her students at Uniondale High School enjoyed her lively senior honors classes along with her encouragement to their future success in life. When World War II started, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving at Cherry Pt. and Camp LeJune in North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joseph Gaffney; brothers, Joseph and Francis Gaffney; sisters, Catherine Ayers and Regina Keenan; brother-in-law, Walter Keenan; and nephews, Kevin Keenan and Francis Gaffney Jr.

Mary is survived by her sister, Theresa (Jerry) Pinto; sister-in-law, Helen (John) Rothermich; and nieces and nephews, Christina and Robert Conner, MaryKate, Walter, Bridget, and Colleen Keenan, Joseph, Kathryn, Michael, and Robert Gaffney, and Kathleen, Stephen, and Mary Pinto

Her life abounded with friends. Everyone who knew her became her friend. She was always there for anyone who needed her.

Mary's family celebrates her for a life notable for grace, love, humor and abiding Catholicism. God gave her a long life; she will be missed.

A Mass to honor her life will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5130 Rattlesnake Hammock Road, Naples, FL 34112 on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 (TOMORROW), at 1:00 p.m.

At Mary's request, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Collier County, 2210 Santa Barbara Blvd., Naples, FL 34116.
