MAIN, James M.
1928 – 2014
Peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, age 86. Jim passed just as he wanted to, at home with family by his side and no regrets. Born in Nairn, Scotland, Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Main, daughters Sally- Ann Main (Andrew Webster), Gillian Main (Dugald Maudsley) and son Alec Main (Dr. Alayne Main). Missing their Granda are grandsons Evan, Sean and Logan Webster, Callum and Lachlan Maudsley, Derek Main and granddaughter Sasha Main. Also survived by his sisters Margaret Main (Ottawa) and Janet Duncan (England). Predeceased by his brother Dr. John Main and his parents David and Christina Main. Jim attended Aberdeen University where he graduated 1950 with an Honours B. Sc. in Civil Engineering. He furthered his education with a Bureau of Highway Traffic diploma from Yale University in 1962. His career as a Consulting Engineer was largely spent with Delcan Corporation (formally De Leuw Cather, Canada Ltd.) where he rose to the office of President (1974) and then President and CEO (1979), positions he held until his retirement in 1992. Generous with his time outside of work, Jim was a Past President of the Consulting Engineers of Ontario, Past President of Bayview Golf and Country Club, and Engineer Division Chair for the United Way Campaign. Foremost, Jim was a family man. He was a wonderful husband and father, a much-loved Granda, and an eternal optimist. He was also an accomplished golfer, avid skier, badminton and squash player, sailing enthusiast, and ever-loving Scotch connoisseur. Jim is remembered as a generous man with a positive spirit and a twinkle in his eye. He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held on Monday, June 16th, 5-7 p.m. at the Bayview Golf and Country Club, 25 Fairway Heights Drive, Thornhill.
