John William Benson

NEW BERN - John William "Bill" Benson, age 86, died peacefully at his home Monday, November 19, 2012. He was born May 28, 1926, in Detroit, Mich. to John Harold Benson and Nettie Nyberg Benson. Bill graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Ohio and also attended the Culver Military Academy summer programs where he rode with the Black Horse Troop. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was in the first battalion to land in Hiroshima to build airfields after the bomb was dropped. He returned home and graduated in 1951 from Purdue University with a BS in mechanical engineering and where he was a member of Kappa Delta Rho social fraternity.

Bill began his professional career with Mullins Manufacturing in Salem, Ohio and worked in engineering over the years at Raymond Concrete Pile in Youngstown, Ohio, Ohio Corrugating in Warren, Ohio and retired as manager of engineering for American Standard in Salem, Ohio in 1990. That same year he was awarded American Standard's highest award for outstanding managerial performance. Additionally, in the late 1970's, he owned and operated Al-Reddi Foods in Cleveland, Ohio.

Bill married Shirley McCave on March 9, 1957. He was a devoted and loving family man who was adored by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was known for his terrific sense of humor! For years he enjoyed jogging and subsequently walking. He was an avid boater and a member of the Youngstown Power Squadron. He loved to golf and was a charter member of the Salem Hills Golf & Country Club. He had a life-long fascination with cars, having taken apart and reassembled a Model T while in junior high school. His passion continued, and never wavered, as his most recent car was a red Corvette he purchased at age 75. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem, Ohio.

Survivors include his adoring wife of 55 years, Shirley McCave Benson; daughters, Linda Benson of Alexandria, Va. and Beth Benson, Md. and husband Keith Bennert, MD, and their children, Kevin William and Ryan Elizabeth Bennert of New Bern.
