NEW BERN - Wayne Edward Oliver Sr., 70, died at home in the Riverside Community after a lengthy illness. Wayne was born on January 4, 1944 in Pollocksville, NC, to the late Wayne Erasmus Oliver and Bertha Mae Pate Oliver. He attended schools in New Bern and Wilmington, NC, and graduated from Edwards Military Institute in Salemburg, NC, as the top military cadet (Lt Colonel).
He volunteered and served in the US Army and was discharged on December 28, 1962. He also served in the US Navy, in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star; and as a military courier for NATO in Naples, Italy. Wayne was discharged from the Navy on June 18, 1969 and returned to New Bern, where he married Janice Wilder on May 31, 1975. He was employed with Weyerhaeuser for many years and was a long time member of Riverside United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed all outdoor activities. In addition to his parents, Wayne was predeceased by his sister Hortense Skinner Vass Thacker and her son, Donald Vass.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Pollock-Best Chapel with Rev. Carol Grantham and Rev. Mike Register officiating. The family will receive friends just prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Private interment, with US Navy Honors, will be at New Bern Memorial Cemetery. Wayne is survived by his wife, Janice Wilder Oliver; sons, Wayne Edward Oliver Jr., and wife Angela, of Beverly Hills, FL, and Michael John Oliver, and wife Diana, of Youngsville, NC; their mother, Gail McClees Harrison; his grandsons, Trey, Michael, Hunter, and Austin Oliver, and Nicholas and Zachary Poindexter. He also leaves behind his sisters; Dorothy Jean Ward of New Bern and Julia Carol Teague, and husband Bill, of Hendersonville, NC; nephews Arthur Vass Jr. of Lighthouse Point, FL and Keith Teague, and his wife Jayme, of Cumming, GA; nieces Denise Teague Klein, and her husband Joseph, of Cape Coral, FL and Carla Ward Lehman and her husband Luke of New Bern; many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, and his other fallen comrades in arms.
He was blessed for the many, many years of loving care and extreme medical attention he received from his loving wife of 38 years. Thanks also to long time physician, Dr. Joe Overby, his attending physician, who was there for every call for many years; as well Dr Robert Fisher and the staff at Carolina East Medical Center for his many visits; and the Veterans Administration. A special thanks also to members of Riverside United Methodist Church, neighbors in the community and Doretha Bennett and Pat Davis of Craven Co. Home Health & Hospice, who attended his needs so lovingly.
