NEWARK: Martha Lee Peters, 94, of Newark, Ohio, passed away January 9, 2014. She was the daughter of Harvey (Bonnie) Peters and sister of Frances (Bob) Prather and Roy (Lucille) Peters.
She is survived by her nephew John (Janice) Prather of Johnstown, OH; and her nieces Peggy Scott of Hilliard, OH and Norma (Herb) Law of Beverly Hills, FL.
Martha graduated from Johnstown High School and attended the Ohio State University where she earned a BS in Education in 1941. After teaching music for two years, she accepted a position as a music specialist in the American National Red Cross and served in military hospitals in several states as well as overseas assignments in Germany, Philippines, and Japan. In 1962 she received her Masters degree in Therapeutic Recreation and in 1969 her PhD from the University of Illinois. She accepted the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Recreation at the University of Kentucky where she taught until 1973 when she became an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee and later a full professor. In 1984 Martha retired as a Professor Emeritus and spent her retirement traveling the world.
In 2003 Martha moved to Newark, Ohio, to be close to family. She volunteered at the local hospital and was active in the FISH program and the Presbyterian Church. She studied painting and was a very active member of the PEO Sisterhood.
A funeral service will be at CROUSE-KAUBER-SAMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown, on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 1:30 pm with an hour prior of visitation with The Reverend Charlie Smith officiating. Interment will be at Bennington Chapel Cemetery
