MT. VERNON: A funeral service celebrating the life of Melvin F. Darst, age 89, of Mt Vernon, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will follow at Newark Memorial Gardens with the Licking County Veterans Alliance providing military honors.

Melvin passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 in Mt. Vernon at Knox Community Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1924 in Cheshire, Ohio to the late Virgil and Mary Etta Darst.

Mr. Darst was a veteran of WWII serving with the United States Army. He worked at DCSC before retiring in 1974. Melvin had a love of gardening, cooking, fishing, bowling, guitar picking and singing. He loved reading his Bible and was a member of Bible Temple of God. He was a 49 year member of Baltimore VFW Post # 3761 and was a loving, loyal and faithful patriarch to all his family.

Mr. Darst is survived by his wife, Pauline Grace (Andrews) Avery-Darst; son, Melvin L. (Anita) Darst of Linden, TN; daughter, Yvonne (Dwight) Darst-Back of Mt. Vernon; stepchildren, Sharon A. Smith and Michael G. Avery, both of Newark; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; sisters, Virginia McDavid of Ypsilanti, MI and Viola (Clark) Vanest of Dublin, OH.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace; brother, George Lemley; sister, Mary Belle Lemley; and half-brother, Frederick Lemley.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, November 22, at the funeral home, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark.
