Orval Charles Burris

HEATH: A funeral service celebrating the life of Orval Charles Burris, age 91, of Heath, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Charles Mason officiating. Burial will follow at Kirkersville Cemetery where the Licking County Veterans Alliance will provide military honors.

Mr. Burris was born November 22, 1922 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Claude G. and Gertrude (Bradford) Burris. He passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 26, 2014.

Mr. Burris was a employed with several different companies including, Westinghouse, Rockwell, Ohio Pipeline, General Motors and Huffy Bicycle.

He proudly served his country serving in the United States Navy as an Armed Guard from 1942-1946. In 1943 he served on the U.S.S. City of Omaha for eight months, in North Russia as a part of the "forgotten convoy" in the Black Sea. Then in 1944 he went on to serve on the U.S.S. Lot Wickcomb in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by service on the R.C. Stoner in the Pacific Ocean through the end of the World War II. One of the highlights of his military career was dining with Eleanor Roosevelt in The White House. Before his military career, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp in Idaho. Orval coached Little League in Heath, Ohio for many, many years. He was also an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. Most of all Orval enjoyed being with his family and dearly loved his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by four children, David C. (Maria V.) Burris of Hanover, William G. (M. Gayle) Burris of Granville, Linda S. (Ronald) Barton of Newark and Becky A. (Joseph) Smith of St. Louisville; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and two special ones on the way; four sisters-in-law, Wanda Clark of Vandalia, Ohio, Louella Burris of Fairborn, Ohio, Pearl Thompson of Lebanon, Ohio and Barb Wetzel of St. Paul, Minnesota.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla A. (Wetzel) Burris; four brothers; and one sister.

Friends may call Wednesday, April 30, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service, 1249 Hebron Road, Heath.
