Reverend Walter "Richard" Welker

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN: Reverend Walter "Richard" Welker died Monday, November 11, 2013 at the age of 86, in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Garnet Carter Welker; and a son, Joel Dennis Welker.

He is survived by his loving wife, Laura Prather Welker; daughter, Amy Murphy (Kenneth) Wells of Greenville, IN; son, Matthew Scott Welker of New Albany, IN; three sisters, Marilyn Flanagan and Peggy (Jim) Allen, both of Lake Placid, FL. and Janice Pendexter of Buckeye Lake, OH; step-daughter, Greta Dawson Noe (Jeff Jenkins) of Rineyville, KY; step-son Greg (Amy) Dawson of Huntersville, NC; grandsons, Joel Murphy, Sonny Murphy and Joel Foltz; and granddaughters, Jessie Foltz, Katelyn Large, Montanna Noe and Channing Dawson.

Reverend Welker was born July 23, 1927, in Newark, Ohio, where he graduated from Newark Senior High School.

He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve, attended Ohio State University and graduated from Butler University (B.A. 1957).

Reverend Welker earned his Bachelor of Divinity from the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis in 1961. Over the course of his career, he served as student pastor or held pastorates at Fenn's Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Shelbyville, Indiana; Fairland Christian Church, Fairland, Indiana; Bruceville Christian Church, Bruceville, Indiana; Milroy Christian Church, Milroy, Indiana; Floyds Knobs Christian Church, Floyds Knobs, Indiana; Howard Park Christian Church, Clarksville, Indiana; and First Christian Church, Mitchell, Indiana.

Reverend Welker was the resident pastor for the Honeymoon Bed and Breakfast Mansion in New Albany, Indiana, and performed 555 weddings during his pastorates.

In addition to his ministry work, Richard was Executive Director of the Floyd County Economic Opportunity Corporation from 1970 to 1973. He was an agent for Monumental Life Insurance Company for 12 years, and became an independent insurance agent after retiring from Monumental in 1992.

Richard was a member of Jefferson Masonic Lodge #104 F&A.M., a 32nd Degree member of the AASR Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and a Nobel of Kosair Shrine, Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member and Elder of the Floyds Knobs Christian Church, Floyds Knobs, Indiana.

Cremation has been chosen. A Masonic Service will be held at Tunnel Hill Christian Church, Edwardsville, Indiana, with visitation beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday and a Celebration of Life ceremony at 6:00 p.m.
