A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Charles Lee Brock will be held on August 3, 2013 at 3:00pm at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach. Dr. Brock, a retired ophthalmologist who practiced in Daytona Beach for 42 years, passed away July 12th after a short illness. A native of Asheville, North Carolina, Dr. Brock attended Duke University where his undergraduate studies were interrupted for active duty service as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II, serving on anti-submarine warfare duty in the Atlantic Ocean. After being released from duty at the end of WWII, Dr. Brock remained in the active Navy Reserve, returning to Duke to finish his undergraduate degree. He taught chemistry for two years at Asheville-Biltmore College (now the University of North Carolina at Asheville) before returning to Duke for medical school. Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Brock returned to active duty and transferred to the medical corps, completing his medical internship at USMC Camp Pendleton, California and his postgraduate work at the University of Illinois and at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. Following his final active duty service with the Navy in 1960, Dr. Brock and family moved to Ormond Beach. He was soon asked to serve as the medical officer for the local Naval Reserve Unit, conducting thousands of enlistment physicals for all branches of the military services. Dr. Brock had a long career as a member of the Naval Reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain in 1983. Dr. Brock served on the staff of Halifax Medical Center for many years, including serving as chief of ophthalmology. He was the Florida State Medical Advisor of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness (now Prevent Blindness America), an Eagle Scout and a life long volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Brock is survived by two children, Sandra F. Brock of Alpharetta, Georgia and Darrell (Debbie) Brock of Ormond Beach; two grandchildren Dustin and David; and one great grandson Connor. His longtime companion Janet Hardesty predeceased him in 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prevent Blindness America at www.preventblindness.org or to Boy Scout Troop 468, c/o FUMC, 336 S. Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32176. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Ormond. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com
