Craig William Bowen, age 50, of Norfolk, VA, died suddenly Sunday morning June 15, 2014 at his mother's home in Deland, FL. Born September 9, 1963 in Daytona Beach, FL, he was the son of Joan Anderson Bowen and the late Lawrence Bowen. Craig was a scholar and life-long learner having earned a BS in chemistry from Emory University, master degrees in chemistry and educational psychology from Purdue University, a PhD in science education from Florida State University, and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. He was a lover of animals especially dogs, a person who appreciated good food and wine, an adventuresome chef, a world traveler, a valued friend and colleague, and a dedicated yoga practitioner. Craig was the assistant for special projects to the COO of Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Over his two decade career at numerous universities, Craig was a chemistry professor, institutional researcher, director of medical education, and assistant to the VP for administration and finance. Craig is survived by his loving wife Patricia A. Metz of Baltimore, MD; his mother Joan Bowen; his sister Pamela Joan Bowen of East Palatka, FL; his brother Lawrence Scott Bowen and wife Vicky Bowen of DeLand; and his brother-in-law and partner Robert Metz and Ken Pruszynski. Craig was preceded in death by his beloved Samoyeds Romeo and Natasha. A memorial service will be held the morning of July 19, 2014 at his mother's home in DeLand. Those wishing to attend should contact the family. Another memorial service will be held in Baltimore at a later date. Craig gave generously to the Maryland SPCA in Baltimore.
