Pastor Gerald C. Daniels, 91 of DeLand passed away January 13, 2014. He was born December 2, 1922 in Page City, Kansas. In February 1943 he married his childhood sweetheart Margie Bahret. He was wounded in World War II and awarded the Purple Heart. With the help of the GI Bill he attended seminary. He was ordained as a Lutheran pastor and served congregations in DeLand, FL; Jamestown, Cobleskill, and Kendall, NY. Upon retirement the couple returned to Florida and lived in Ormond by the Sea. Finally they moved to Good Samaritan Florida Lutheran Retirement Center in DeLand. In the mid 1950's he played a contributory role in the founding of the retirement center and played an instrumental role in finding the property for the facilities. He preached and lived the gospel of love and forgiveness. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were especially appreciative recipients of his unconditional love, understanding and forgiveness frequently. For many years Pastor Daniels taught classes in Prayer Therapy emphasizing the power and influence of prayer, honesty and self-forgiveness. He played a major role in developing a ministry to the youth and poor in the neighborhood of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jamestown, New York JNP, the Joint Neighborhood Project is still serving the needs of the neighborhood today. He actively supported civil rights and joined the march from Selma to Montgomery in March of 1965. From 1970 to 1976 he served as administrator of the Lutheran Home, a retirement and nursing center in Jamestown, New York. He and Margie were known to take in and or care for drunks, ex-cons and troubled youth. They also provided support for lonely elderly people giving them a sense of family. He will be remembered for his teasing yet loving sense of humor, his hugs and his ability to put people at ease. Pastor Daniels is survived by his daughter Karen and Bob Daugherty of Dothan, Alabama; his son Jerry and Irma Daniels of Austin, Texas; his son David and Jennifer Daniels of Astoria, Oregon; eleven grandchildren, Kristin, Michael, Boone, Amanda, Chris, Cassie, Alan, Eliamar, Carly, Andy and Hannah; eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Also surviving Gerald are brother Johnny and Hazel Daniels; sister in law Sandra Bahret and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Marguerite Bahret Daniels; daughter Christine Daniels; parents John and Mabel Daniels; brother Oren Daniels; sisters Lola Baker and Viola Starr and brother in law Carl Bahret. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Florida Lutheran Retirement Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Florida Lutheran Retirement Aux. Fund or Faith Lutheran Church of DeLand.
