Henry F. Hoppe, 104 years old, of New Smyrna Beach, passed away on January 12, 2014 at 9:20 a.m. He was born April 5, 1909 to Henry and Jacobina Hoppe of Newark, New Jersey. Henry graduated from East Side High School in Newark, New Jersey, and also attended New York University. In his early twenties he was a carpenter in Florida and New Jersey. In 1938 he married Myrtle Spatcher, also of Newark, New Jersey. During World War II, he worked in a war factory as a tool machinist and bought his first hardware store in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He later expanded and moved his business, Hoppe's Hardware, to Upper Montclair, NJ. Henry retired when only 51 years old, and in 1982 he and his wife Myrtle retired to New Smyrna Beach. Henry has been a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Garden Club, and the Senior Ballroom Dance Group. His special passions were dancing and tending his citrus trees. Henry was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, two brothers, and a grandson. He is survived by his two children, Mary Ann (David) Hughes of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Richard (Chris) of Johnsburg, Illinois and New Smyrna Beach; seven grand-children; 20 great-grandchildren; three nieces; and one nephew. Burial will be at the Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery adjacent to his wife.
