- A Mass of Christian Burial for Jack Alvarez, 95, of N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach, who passed away June 23, 2013 at Florida Hospital, will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 101 University Blvd., Daytona Beach with Pastor Phil Egitto as celebrant. Friends wishing to call and pay their respects may do so Thursday from 4 until 6 pm at the church. A Tampa native, Mr. Alvarez moved to this area in the 1950's after working as an engineer with the space program at Cape Canaveral. He worked for General Electric until they closed their operation in Daytona and became a professor at Daytona State College until his retirement. Jack began his formal education at Princeton University and graduated from Georgia Tech University with a degree in engineering. While at Princeton he joined a naval program and later served in the U.S Navy as an officer during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Alvarez was an active member of Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a passionate member of the Democratic Party, a champion college tennis player and a fan of both tennis and the Florida State Seminoles. Jack was a devoted husband to the love of his life for over 50 years, Marianne. Other survivors include nieces and nephews, Paul Alvarez, Karen Tucker, Lucita Moran (God Daughter), Dr. Ramon Moran, Jr. & wife Maria, Brenda Alvarez and Susan Alvarez; grand nieces and nephews, Lisa, Laura, Austin, Brittany and James. Jack was loved and will be greatly missed by his staff of caregivers -- Blanca Colona, Brunella Moralez, Pam Kitchens, Monica Gonzalez, Barbara Martinez, Norma Quintana, Denise Senn, Ismeri Torres, Cari Puerto and Adita Canavero.
