John Russell Smith, 82, passed away on May 14, 2013, at the Windsor of Palm Coast. He was born in DeLand, Florida, to the late John W. and Susie Jane (Crofton) Smith on April 6, 1931. He was a loving and dedicated father and husband. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carole; his two daughters, Susan Maxcy (Stewart) and Anne Smith. He was the proud grandfather to Patrick, Stephen, and Marissa Maxcy. After attending the University of Florida, Russell served in the Air Force from 1953-1957 during the Korean War as a B-29 crew chief. He met his wife, Carole, while they both served in the Air Force and were married in Bedford, Massachusetts in May of 1954. After the military, Russell worked for Florida Power Corporation in DeLand as an electrical engineer for 35 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of DeLand, was a 32nd degree Mason, and member of St. John's Lodge #37 F & A.M. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand. Military Honors will be provided by the U. S. Air Force. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Walk-in Ministry, 306 W. Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, FL 32720 or to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia / Flagler, 2381 Mason Avenue, Suite 100, Daytona Beach, FL 32117.
