Kathryn Costa, 1922-2014, age 91, of Ormond by the Sea, passed away on January 9, 2014. There will be a celebration of life on January 25, 2014 at St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach at 2:00pm. Kathryn was born in Omaha, Nebraska on October 17, 1922 and was raised in Jefferson City, Missouri. She attended college at the Capital Commercial College. At the age of 19, she went to work for the government in Washington, D.C. She joined the Women's Marines at the height of World War II and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. At the end of the war she returned to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a secretary for the Marine Air Corps. She received a degree at the University School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri where she met and married her first husband Walter E. Allen of Watertown, Massachusetts. They moved to Chelms Ford, Massachusetts where they raised two daughters. She received her Master's Degree in Education at Fitchburg Massachusetts State College. She taught school in Pelham, New Hampshire and Chelmsford Junior High School. In 1963 she moved to Florida. She taught school at Mainland Junior High and Ormond Beach Junior High. She retired from teaching in 1992 but continued to substitute in the Ormond Beach school system. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa for 39 years and was in charge of the scholarship and drug awareness programs. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose, The Ormond Beach Eagles Club, and the Women Marines Association. She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Conrad and her husband Joseph of New Boston, New Hampshire and Diana Pepin of South Daytona, Florida, two granddaughters, Kristi Loiselle of Weare, New Hampshire and Michelle Goodwin of Raleigh, North Carolina, a sister, Carol Buescher of Valdosta, Georgia, six great grandchildren, and four nephews and their families of Valdosta, Georgia. She was predeceased by her husband, Carmen Costa, who passed away in January 2010. Arrangements are being handled under the careful direction of Dale Woodward Funeral Homes in Ormond Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 44 S Halifax Dr, Ormond Beach, FL 32176, where she was an active member.
