Mary Alice Hennessy O'Neal, 76, a resident of Ormond Beach for 37 years, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 18, 2013. A native of Franklin Park, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Marion Schmidt Hennessy and Edward J. Hennessy. She is preceded in death by brother, Michael J. Hennessy, Carlsbad, Ca. She is survived by her devoted husband of 32 years, Col. Joseph T. O'Neal; by her son Jim Jacobs of Gainesville; by her brother Daniel J. Hennessy and wife Sylvia, Atlanta, Ga.; and by her sister-in-law Jody Hennessy, Carlsbad, Ca. Mary Alice graduated from the University of Illinois, then earned two Masters, in Elementary Education and in Library Science in her home state where she began her career as a media specialist. After moving to Ormond Beach in 1976, she continued educating children in local schools, including Long Street Elementary, and Pine Trail School in Ormond Beach-- retiring in 1992. Her commitment to educating children, especially in instilling a love for reading books was evident throughout her career and continued after her retirement with volunteer work. As an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach, Mary Alice gave generously and compassionately of her time, including in the Altar Guild, HUM-Feeding the Hungry, and the Women's Bible Study. Mary Alice's love of Christ flowed not only to those in her church and the community but also to friends, family and her beloved husband Joe. She touched many lives and will be missed. A Celebration Memorial will be held for Mary Alice at St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach on Monday, October 7 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Daytona Beach or to St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach.
