Monroe Pershing Rhodes, 94, resident of Country Side Lakes Assistant Living, Port Orange FL passed on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 after a brief illness to his new address in Heaven. He will be dearly missed by his only child, Margo Rhodes Chalk; and son-in-law Roger Chalk, both of Ada, MI and New Smyrna Beach, FL.; and his granddaughters, Krissy Chalk, of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Ashley Chalk of Orlando, FL. He leaves his nephew, Carlos Corzine and family and niece, Corretta Corzine all of Anderson, IN. Monroe was born June 5, 1919 in Cape Girardeau, MO where he married the love of his life, Margie L. Fowler and sweetly shared 69 years together. He proudly served in the US Army in New Guinea during WWII and had a lifelong love of his country always displaying the American flag. He attended SW Missouri State, where he played tennis and trumpet in the school band. After moving to Anderson, IN he worked as an engineer for Lynch Corporation and retired from Guide Division of General Motors. He and Margie enjoyed retirement living in El Paso, TX and Port Orange FL as well as traveling in Europe and throughout the U.S. Monroe never met a stranger in life and was the epitome of a gentleman with an engaging personality of a warm handshake, gentle spirit and a smile for all. He enjoyed 30 years of new Cadillacs, polishing and shining them as his hobby. Daily, for inspiration, he played all types of music and sang in church quartets, choirs and as a soloist praising His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was currently a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, Port Orange, FL and formerly of Park Place Church of God, Anderson, IN and First Baptist Church of El Paso, TX. The family will hold a memorial service in celebration of his life on Sunday, November 3 at 2:00pm at Country Side Lakes, 941 Village Trail, Port Orange, FL.
